Inspect what would be retained
Ask a cabinet professional to assess the boxes, shelves, joints, hardware and any signs of moisture damage. Identify doors or drawers that do not function properly and ask whether the cause can be corrected within the proposed scope.
Then judge the layout separately. Does the current arrangement provide usable storage and fit the appliances you intend to keep or buy? A new finish or new door style will not change a cabinet’s depth or move an awkward corner.
Define the three options precisely
Refinishing generally centers on changing or renewing the visible finish of retained components. Refacing generally keeps cabinet boxes while changing visible fronts and coverings. Replacement introduces new cabinets. Contractors may use these terms differently, so define the exact work in each proposal.
Ask what preparation, repairs, doors, drawer fronts, end panels, trim and hardware are included. Have the professional confirm coating or covering compatibility with the existing material. Approve a physical sample showing the intended result rather than relying only on a digital color.
Include the surrounding work
Identify what happens to counters, sink, backsplash, lighting and appliances during the work. If items are retained, ask how they are protected and what happens if removal or reinstatement damages them. If items change, check dimensions before committing to cabinet modifications.
Compare complete installed scopes instead of separate cabinet prices. Include disposal, repairs, temporary kitchen disruption and adjustments required after installation.
- Existing condition and repairs included.
- Exact components retained and replaced.
- Finish system, sample and expected visible variation.
- Hardware and internal storage changes.
- Work on counters, appliances, walls and trim.
- Lead time, access arrangements, care instructions and warranty.
Choose around the remaining service life and function
Ask each bidder to explain the limits of the proposed option. A refinish may suit sound cabinets and a satisfactory layout; replacement is worth studying when the retained structure or arrangement is the main problem. Neither conclusion should be made from style alone.
For older painted surfaces, have the contractor review applicable lead-safe renovation considerations before preparation begins. EPA’s current guidance is a useful starting point. Confirm the work method and occupied-home arrangements without treating this article as a DIY refinishing procedure.
