Describe the exposure and the people using it

List sun exposure, shade, rain, nearby irrigation and any pool use. State whether people will commonly be barefoot, carry food, move wheeled furniture or use mobility equipment. Include cleaning expectations and whether the space is covered.

Ask the supplier which documented product applications fit those conditions. A finish approved for an exterior wall is not automatically suitable for an exterior walking surface or pool surround. Daltile’s selection guidance illustrates the importance of checking the exact application category.

Review wet-use information carefully

Request the manufacturer’s intended-use classification and relevant test information for the exact product and finish. Ask a qualified designer how that information applies to this layout, expected exposure and maintenance plan.

TCNA’s published product-use material distinguishes application categories. Avoid turning one test number into a blanket safety guarantee. Surface condition, contaminants, use and the installed environment all deserve consideration. No material should be presented as eliminating slip risk.

Compare comfort and maintenance alongside looks

View representative samples in the project’s light and discuss heat exposure with the supplier. Ask about documented temperature-related performance where available and how shade or furniture placement affects the experience. Do not test hot surfaces with bare feet or assume a cool showroom sample predicts outdoor comfort.

Review texture, cleaning, staining, color variation and compatibility with any sealer. Ask what ordinary care costs in time and what products or methods should be avoided.

  • Exact material, finish and intended application.
  • Wet-use classification and evidence appropriate to the setting.
  • Heat exposure and shade strategy.
  • Cleaning and treatment requirements.
  • Joint, edge and transition details.
  • Repair approach and replacement-material availability.

Approve the assembled result

Ask how the finish works with its substrate, drainage plan, movement joints and adjacent materials. A selection that looks ideal may change finished heights or require a different supporting scope.

Where practical, review a sample assembly showing the surface, joint color and edge detail. Keep product and care records after installation. Choose the option whose documented use and maintenance expectations fit the household, without relying on unsupported claims that a surface will always stay cool or safe.
