Use the same patio plan for both options

Show the same finished area, furniture, access route and edge conditions in each quotation. If one proposal includes steps, demolition or drainage and the other does not, the totals are not yet comparable.

Ask the contractor to describe how the existing ground, old paving and access conditions were assessed. Identify what remains uncertain below the surface. The estimate should distinguish preparation from the visible patio material so you can see the scope that supports it.

Understand the assemblies at an owner level

For a paver option, ask about the specified base, bedding, joints, perimeter restraint and transitions. CMHA’s maintenance guidance treats these as parts of an interlocking pavement system. Confirm the selected product and intended use rather than assuming all pavers use the same design.

For poured concrete, ask how the designer or contractor addresses joints, the finish, curing and interfaces with other construction. NRMCA’s guidance explains the role of joints in slabs. Request a proposed joint layout so its appearance is understood before placement.

Compare repairs and maintenance realistically

Ask how local settlement, staining or damage would be investigated and repaired for each option. With a modular surface, discuss access for future repairs and suitable spare units. With concrete, discuss the likely appearance and scope of a localized repair. Avoid expecting invisible repairs from either system.

Get written cleaning and maintenance guidance for the exact surface, joint material and any sealer. Ask which treatments can alter appearance or performance.

  • Site preparation and complete supporting assembly.
  • Drainage and connection to house thresholds.
  • Joints, edges, steps and material transitions.
  • Installation access, weather limits and time before use.
  • Future repair approach and maintenance duties.

Review samples in the setting where you will use them

Look at samples beside the house and proposed furniture. Discuss texture, heat exposure and wet conditions with the supplier and designer. A showroom sample cannot demonstrate every installed condition.

Choose after the contractor has reconciled site constraints and both quotes show comparable scope. Neither material removes the need for a drainage plan or appropriate ground preparation. A useful selection explains what you prefer, what upkeep you accept and what construction work is included.
